What to Wear for Your Photo Session (Without Looking Like Your Matching)

This is one of the most common questions I get and honestly, for good reason.

What you wear plays a big role in how your photos feel, but it doesn’t need to be stressful, complicated, or overly planned. My biggest piece of advice?
Aim for cohesive, not coordinated.

Cohesive vs. Coordinated (There’s a Big Difference)

Matching outfits — same colors, same styles — can feel stiff and dated really quickly.

A cohesive look, on the other hand, feels effortless. It’s about choosing colors and textures that work well together without everyone looking the same.

Think: harmony, not uniforms.

Neutral Colors Always Photograph Best

Neutral tones photograph beautifully because they don’t compete with your faces, emotions, or connection.

Some of my favorite colors to suggest:

• Creams and ivories

• Soft browns and tans

• Olive and muted greens

• Rust, clay, and warm neutrals

• Soft blues and muted grays

These tones age well and keep the focus where it belongs — on you.

Texture Makes a Huge Difference

Texture adds depth and interest without being distracting.
Linen, knits, flowy dresses, and layered pieces all photograph beautifully.

A cozy sweater, a soft dress, or a worn-in jacket can elevate a session without feeling overdone.

What to Avoid

A few things I recommend skipping:

• Neon or super bright colors

• Large logos or bold graphics

• Tiny, busy patterns

These tend to pull attention away from the moment and don’t age as well over time.

How I Help With Styling

You’re never on your own when it comes to outfits.

I help all of my clients with styling whether that’s offering suggestions, helping you build outfits that work together, or pulling pieces from my client closet. The goal is always to make this part easy and stress-free.

You don’t need to be fashionable. You just need to feel comfortable and like yourself.

Final Thoughts

When you look back at your photos years from now, you won’t remember what exact outfit you wore you’ll remember how it felt. Neutral, cohesive outfits help create images that feel timeless, emotional, and real.

And that’s always the goal.
