Questions People Ask Before Booking a Couples Session | Wisconsin Couples Photographer

If you’ve been thinking about booking a couples session but have questions, you’re not alone. I hear many of the same things from couples before they book, and most of them come down to this: people assume couples sessions will feel awkward, overly posed, or only make sense for engagements.

That’s not how I approach them at all.

If you’ve been curious about booking a couples session but have been sitting on questions, here are some of the ones I hear most often.

What if we feel awkward in front of the camera?

This is probably the question I hear most.

And honestly? Most couples feel a little unsure at first. That’s normal.

The good news is, you do not have to know what to do. My sessions are guided with prompts, movement, and interaction, so you’re not left trying to “perform” for the camera. You’re focused on each other, not the camera.

Most couples settle in quickly and end up telling me it felt much easier than they expected.

What if my partner hates taking photos?

Another very common one.

And truly, the partner who claims they hate photos is often the one who ends up having the most fun.

Why? Because a good couples session shouldn’t feel like standing in place smiling for an hour. It should feel relaxed. Playful. Connected.

Sometimes it feels more like a date than a photoshoot.

That changes everything.

Do we have to be engaged to book one?

Not at all.

Couples sessions are for dating couples, married couples, anniversaries, pregnancy announcements, or simply documenting this season because you want to.

You do not need a milestone to have meaningful photos together.

Ordinary love is reason enough.

What do we even do during a couples session?

More than most people expect.

We walk. We move. We talk. We laugh.

Sometimes we build a session around an activity or a place that feels meaningful to you.

That could look like wandering downtown, grabbing coffee, visiting an arcade bar, hiking a trail, or simply catching golden hour in a beautiful field.

The best sessions feel like an experience, not a checklist.

What should we wear?

You do not have to figure this out alone.

I help my couples with styling guidance so your outfits feel cohesive, photograph beautifully, and still feel true to you.

What you wear can make a big difference in the overall feel of your images, and I’m always happy to help you think through options.

Where should we do our session?

The location can be part of the story.

Some couples want a nature-filled setting. Some want a more urban feel. Some want a place that means something to them personally.

I help couples choose locations based on the kind of session they want their photos to feel like.

There isn’t one right answer. It depends on your story.

What if we don’t know how to pose?

That is my job, not yours.

You do not need to show up knowing how to stand or what to do with your hands.

I use prompts and natural direction to create movement and connection so your photos feel like you, not stiff or forced.

Can we bring an idea or make the session feel personal?

Please do.

I love when couples bring ideas, meaningful locations, or something that makes the session feel more personal.

Some of the most memorable sessions happen when couples lean into something that feels true to them.

Are couples photos actually worth it?

I may be biased, but yes.

Because these often become the photos people don’t realize they’ll treasure until years later.

Your relationship deserves to be documented in ordinary seasons too, not just weddings or major milestones.

Ordinary love matters.

What if we’ve never done this before?

Honestly… most of my couples haven’t.

You do not need experience to have a great session.

In fact, many people booking their first couples session are surprised by how natural and fun it feels once we begin.

That’s very normal.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been thinking about booking a couples session but have been hesitating because you feel awkward, unsure, or don’t know where to start, I hope this helped answer some of those questions.

Couples sessions can be relaxed, meaningful, fun, and deeply personal.

If you’re looking for a Waukesha area couples photographer or planning a couples session anywhere in southeastern Wisconsin, I’d love to help you dream something up.
