There is just something about a fair that makes the perfect backdrop for a couples session. The lights, the rides, the food, the little bit of chaos happening all around you—it already feels like a date night, which makes it so easy to forget you’re even having your photos taken.

This couples session at the Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn, Wisconsin was exactly that. We wandered around the fairgrounds, stopped wherever the light looked good, played games, grabbed fair food, and just let the night unfold instead of trying to make every photo feel perfectly planned.

And those are always the sessions I love the most.

A Couples Session That Actually Feels Like a Date

One of my favorite things about photographing couples is finding ways to make your session feel like something you would actually do together.

You don’t have to spend an hour standing in a field smiling at me to have beautiful photos together. Sometimes the best thing we can do is pick a place where there is already something happening and let you two just be together.

The Walworth County Fair gave us SO much to work with. Walking through the midway, riding rides, stopping at different booths, laughing at each other and taking in everything going on around us—it created so many little moments without having to force anything.

I could give a little direction when we needed it, but for the most part, I got to step back and document them being themselves.

The Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn might not be the first place you you think of when you picture engagement or couples photos, but that’s exactly why I love it.

There is so much variety packed into one location. During the earlier part of the evening, you have that warm end-of-summer light coming through the fairgrounds, and once the sun starts disappearing, everything completely changes.

The carnival lights come on, the sky gets darker, and suddenly everything has this colorful, nostalgic, almost movie-like feeling to it.

It gives you two completely different looks without ever having to leave the fairgrounds.

The Kind of Photos That Feel Like a Memory

I’m always looking for the moments in between the “actual” photos.

The way you look at each other when you think I’m not photographing you. Holding hands while you’re walking to the next ride. Laughing because something absolutely did not go according to plan. Sharing food. Getting competitive over a carnival game. Running through the lights at the end of the night.

Those tiny moments are what make a gallery feel like you.

I want you to look back at your photos and remember what that night actually felt like—not just remember that you had a photo session scheduled.

Why I Love Untraditional Couples Session Locations

Give me a fair, an arcade, a record store, a downtown street, a beach, a drive-in—anything that gives us something to actually do together.

Traditional locations can absolutely be beautiful, but your couples photos don’t have to look like everyone else’s.

Choosing a location that means something to you—or even just choosing somewhere that sounds like a really fun date night—can completely change the way your session feels.

It gives you something to focus on besides the camera, which naturally creates more movement, interaction, and those candid moments I’m always looking for.
